Thank you, Simon, for a comprehensive explanation that even I could understand (for the most part). I'm doing research on SSL now.
The Apple laptop uses an outdated version of Safari that, as already stated, will not upgrade, although progressively more websites tell me my ability to "do business thereon" will be hampered. Yes, it is mightily hampered. Well, they don't say hampered, but that's the idea.
I use Chrome on my DELL and, apart from the occasional "unresponsive" alert, it is great.

Your point is well taken.
When Simon went to https:, the Apple immediately went basic, as described. He explained to me the possible reasons. The DELL has never ceased functioning properly on any and all websites.
RE: Facebook: iPhoto on Apple is terrific, but as of yesterday, I can no longer post photos from it onto Facebook. So, I have to email photos to my DELL and download them there. Then, I can post them here, FB, anywhere. And the DELL is, by far, the cheaper of the two computers.
Sorry to go off track here. Hope it all works out for you.

Likewise, Village Idiot, for me -- on again, off again.
I have two old laptops -- a DELL and an Apple PowerBook. The Dell, which readily updates, is fine here, but the Apple, which WILL NOT upgrade, allows only reading on this forum, i.e., no replies, no photos, no members only.
On my Apple, it's frustrating because more and more websites are not permitting interaction and are displaying text only. Facebook's a nightmare.
So, in my case, I believe it's my computers.

so i am in trouble for questioning the whole rats nest of deceit and lies.

in matthew 12 jesus says: whoever speaks a word against the son of man will be forgiven, but whoever speaks against the holy spirit will not be forgiven, either in this age or in the one to come.

" the gb seems to replace 'holy spirit' with themselves.

So, then, are the Father, son, and holy spirit passe'?
They were very important when I became a JW.

Mental Illness

over many years i have been pondering how mental illness has impacted upon jw's due to the effects of indoctrination.

in my case; when i was 21 i had a breakdown and was hospitalised for 6 weeks.

i was diagnosed with anxiety tension state disorder.

I'm sorry, Tallon, for what you have endured, and that at such an early age.
I was a bit older when I had my "nervous collapse," as I described it to Nathan Knorr, while I reluctantly prepared to leave Bethel (which I truly did love). Horrors from childhood may have become a time bomb finally set off when the pressures of being a Bethelite/missionary became too great.
What Simon wrote applies in my family's case re: what we used to call manic-depressive disease. My religion became my comfort, my despair, and, through my adult life, seemed only to take me further into a downward spiral. Suicide was an ever-present menace and my family suffered as a result of my increasing mental and emotional instability.
I'm so much better now but making amends has not brought everyone back into my corner.
You're correct, too, about fear and obligation and guilt, whether you said it or intimated it in your post. I really hope that you are doing better now. Isn't this a wonderful place to be?

Visiting Bethel (an old memory)

all my life i was told that i had to visit bethel.

We liked the rum-and-raisin ice cream. I remember having fish every Friday (?!?!?!?!?), as well as ice cream.
Once, we had a cobbler made with concord grapes -- not seedless. How do you spit out seeds with a mouthful of cobbler?
Of course, you had to work there in order to live the dream of the festive board . . .
